While on our way to Las Americas Taqueria & Pupuseria for lunch Bob pointed out this Mexican Bakery. I yelled - "Pull in , quick!" The site of the bakery had made me think of my favorite pastry "Orejas" or "ears".

I was first introduced to Orejas at La Victoria Bakery in the Mission District of San Francisco ( 2937 24th Street between Florida and Alabama (415) 550-9292).

Orejas are similar to certain French pastries. The flat, sweet confection made of puff pastry is called Palmiers in French, Palm Leaves in English, but Mexicans call them Orejas - ears.

Much to my delight the Aurora had a full tray of fresh Ears. I purchased six and immediately went into a day dream about how good they would taste with next mornings coffee. The fragrance wafting out of the bag tempted me to dig in, but I steeled myself and we jumped back into Bob's Jeep and we headed to Las Americas

Aurora Bakery & Cafe Papillon:

Owner Patricia Paiva has an insatiable sweet tooth; her bakery on Nolensville Road has long been a hot spot among Nashville's Hispanic population for its vast selection of Mexican and Central American breads and pastries, along with the decadently rich and irresistible tres leches cake.

The Sri Lankan native recently expanded her baking and retail operation, and she has turned the space next door into a sunny café. The pastries now reflect a more international theme; her baklava rivals that of any Middle Eastern restaurant or grocery in town. Sandwiches on freshly baked rolls, croissants and breads are now available. 3725 Nolensville Pk. 837-1933. Hours: 6 am-9 pm Mon.-Fri.; 6 am-8 pm Sat.; 7 am-2 pm Sun. $
